Precocious Puberty

  • December 7, 2020

Precocious puberty is when the body of a child begins to change into that of an adult (puberty) too soon. When puberty commences in girls before 8 years of age and in boys before 9 years of age, it is considered premature puberty. Puberty involves rapid growth of bones and muscles, adjustments in body shape and size, and the advancement of the body's capacity to reproduce. The cause of precocious puberty often cannot be discovered. Rarely, certain circumstances, such as infectious diseases, hormonal disorders, tumors, brain abnormalities, or accidents, may cause premature puberty. Precocious puberty treatment typically includes drugs that delay further development.
